This is a great drill that what we call lateral targeting. We have two different shots, one from our bad ice area and one from our good ice areas. Our goalie has to find two different depths in the crease and more importantly, having to redefine their depth from our bad ice to our good ice.
Our goaltender is going to start on their post. On the first shot, they’re pushing out toward bad ice. There you can see that our shooter, is going to take a bad ice shot. The shot can be anywhere. Our goalie is going to make a save, follow the rebound out, and then reset on the post.
On the second shot, the goalie pushes out to the bad ice angle again on the dot, and then redefines our depth to our good ice area for a second shot and follows the rebound.
It’s important to see the different depths. So if you look at when she pushes off of her pipe that she’s hitting just inside that crease line, and then as she moves, her head moves. But you can see that we talk about with our skating, especially her t-pushes, that her body rotates before she pushes. So you can see how she’s getting square before she makes that push to redefine her depth. And then you can see right where she’s at, you can see she’s not too far back. Her middle of her foot is probably at the top of the crease, maybe slightly higher. That is a great depth for her height. You don’t want to be too far out because after a certain point, you actually don’t take up any more space.
This is our lateral targeting drill. It can be done from both ways, and it’s a great way to who work on, and redefine our depth and tracking and following rebounds.
