This drill is very similar to our Active Hands – Standing drill and this drill should be a progression from the Active Hands – Standing Drill. The major difference is we add the butterfly drop as the shot is coming in. We still want to remember our good active hands. The shooter, again is going to try and shoot in the area between the goalie’s hip and knee area. The goalie, as the puck comes in, drops to the butterfly and catches or blockers away the puck.
In this drill, we start at the top of the crease, in our basic stance. Then the shooter shoots a shot and we track it in and out of our hands. As the puck comes in the goalie drops. It is important to note that when we drop, our hand position shouldn’t change. We keep our hands out in front and don’t let them fall to our sides. This again fills the areas better and cuts down the amount of net the shooter has to shoot at. (See box control lesson for a recap). We make our save with the hands and then reset for the next shot.
